St. Francis of Assisi - Patron Saint of Animals

St. Francis whose feast day is October 4th, is remembered as the champion of all animals big and small. Each year on his Saint Day, a procession of animals, everything from dogs, cats, hamsters and even horses, are led to churches for a special ceremony called the " Blessing of the Pets".

This custom is conducted in remembrance to St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures.

A pet can be a true companion for many people, as they arrive home from work to find their faithful friend overjoyed at their return. Many a senior has felt the undying love of their animal. The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, as the communication is at its most basic. Eye to Eye, a man or woman and their dog are two creatures of love. No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companion to Church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond is celebrated. The "Blessing of the Pets" usually goes like this:

"Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth the fish from the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired Saint Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask that you bless this pet. By power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God in all your creatures! Amen"

St.Christopher - Patron Saint of Safe Travel

St. Christopher (also known as Kester, Kitts, Offero), is remembered on July 25th.

His fame is derived from the Pious Legend of him being a "Christ Bearer", thus "Christo-pher" He was a powerfully built man who wandered the world in search of novelty and adventure. He came upon a hermit who lived beside a dangerous stream and served others by guiding them to safe places to cross. He gave Christopher instruction in the truth of God. Christopher took the hermits place, but instead of guiding travelers, he carried them safely across.

One day he carried a small child across the stream; the child's weight nearly crushed him. When they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world on himself. He then baptized Christopher with water from the stream. Christopher's service at the stream led to his patronage of all that is related to travel, travellers, and people who carry heavy burdens.

The combining of St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Christopher, provide blessings for you and your pet through a lifetime of companionship and travel.
